Mules, mountains and mochilas in Bolivia’s trekking capital
Whatever will be, will be. Sorata is described as the trekking capital of Bolivia; as a result my preconceptions of trekking in the region contained images of lofty mountains, scenic vistas and the fresh smell of the Andean air. Whilst these preconceptions were realised, they were also peppered by the realities of high-altitude trekking I encountered on my five day trip; freezing cold temperatures, clouds often obscuring those picture-perfect views and the unmistakable odour of mule dung hanging in the air. It was however, the realities that made the trek and I would not have changed any of it for the world (though perhaps for a pair of clean socks).
